The Execution Stage | Lets Dance!

After completing the first three stages of the FCP process, the most recent brief we have been set is the final step. The execution stage is the finalised outcome of all of the ideas that

What we have to do:

Your team will be allocated a CREATIVE CONCEPT taken from existing editorial shoot from the Vogue Archive

You will visually analyse a Creative Concept and research the original shoot.

You will generate 5 words to inform the look of your photoshoot. These words will in turn reveal your interpretation of this Creative concept.

You will produce a series of edited photographs

The creative concept that my group was given was a series of editorial images that my group was given were shot by Corrine Day titled 'Lets Dance' featured in British Vogue 2004 and the fashion accessory that we were given was makeup.

The photographer - Corrine day

Corinne Day is a British fashion photographer that is known for her unique style of photography. Day's photographs first became popular through her fashion editorial titled 'The Third Summer of Love' which was for The Face Magazine and this was published in 1990. The story featured up and coming model at the time, Kate Moss. It was an eight-paged story, using clothing form Romeo Gigli, Joseph Tricot and Ralph Lauren. Unfortunately she died at the age of 45, however her work continues to be a great inspiration and attribute to the world of fashion photography.

Here are some of the images from 'The Third Summer of Love'.

'The Third Summer of Love' - Corrine Day 1990 featuring Kate Moss

Before we were allocated this photographer for this project, I already knew of Corrine Day and I have been a huge fan of her work. The main reason is because she photographs her subjects in an unconventional way. Whether her shoots are elaborate or very minimal, there is always an element of rawness to her photography. This shoot she did for Vogue in 2004 for example, the photographs are very professional and heavily styled yet the photographs still feel degraded and ruff.

Here are some of my favourite Corrine Day images:

The Task

In the seminar we had to analyse the picture. The criteria was:

Identify and describe what the creative concept is.

What are the key themes?

What are the visual inspirations for the editorial?

List the connotations and denotations?

Why does it look like that?

What is the message & tone of voice?

Consider where the editorial was placed and why?

How does this relate to the target consumer?

What props, colours, lighting, location are used to convey these ideas?

Here is the editorial that we were given:

After looking at the images, I came up with words and lists in order to complete the seminar task.

1) Key Themes

Feminine with bite
Grunge
Backtage
Theatre
Concert
A mixture of isolation and focus
The Star of the show
Vintage
Spotlight
Solo
Evening wear
Dance

2) Visual Inspirations
Burlesque
Fame
Backstage
Vintage
Deconstructed
Texture
Worn
Degraded Glamour

3) Message/Tone of voice:

I think that the message within the photograph is that despite the fact that many people can be included within a show, there is always a star and the focus will always be on them. This is shown through the main model in the shoot. She is the only one looking at the camera and the other girls are like props.

4) Colour Palette
Background:
Olive green
Forest green
Mustard

Burnt umber
Soft ochre
Grey

Garments:
Pink
Yellow
Sky blue
Purple
Turquoise

5) Lighting
Dingy
Shadows
Hidden
Dim
Spotlights
Focused lighting
Harsh
Unprofessional

With all of these words and ideas in mind, we are ready for the next step which is to design our photoshoot.

Thanks for reading.
