New Year New Trends - Fishnets

A new trend alert for 2017 is fishnets. They are completely taking over the street style scene with major designers from Moschino to Alexander Wang incorporating them into their designs.

To most, this material is very intimidating and one of those things that most people ponder only to come to the decision that "I'd never be able to pull that off." However, fishnets are coming in more and more variations from the classic tights, tops and dresses. This means that there is something for everyone. The classic tights are having a major comeback this year and all you need to incorporate these into your wardrobe is the right outfit and some inspiration. These differ from the standard tights as they can add a fashion forward and street edge to any outfit.

Fishnet tights
The classic fishnet tights were popular by flappers and showgirls in the 1920’s as hemlines rose (to just barely below the knee). They were popular due to the fact that from a distance and under the bright lights of a dance stage, dots of flesh would show through which was sexy and feminine.

However how we know them today all stems from punks punks and goths in the 70s.  They took control of the fishnet tights and made them more extreme by ripping more holes which were pared with safety pin earrings, patched denim jackets, and more. Especially for female punks, this was a way that they could challenge the conventional stereotypes of women and female clothing.

From looking at different ways of wearing this trend, the one that caught my eye was fishnet tights and ripped jeans. I think that this  is very effective as the layering of two different materials is eye catching. In addition it gives a new and fresh spin to the saturated ripped jeans trend. Even though there many people believe that these tights have negative connotation, I think that the way they are being incorporated into the fashion industry is giving them a more of an artistic and edgy vibe.

This trend has now translated into actual garments rather than just being an accessory. I think that this gives more options to people who are too self conscious to rock the fishnet tights, but would love a top in the same material. Many retailers such as Misguided and Toyshop have created a variety of different pieces using this edgy material. Here are some of my favourite fishnet pieces.
